Cannon, the editor of the Deseret) Xewt, dignified, fine-looking gentle- man, whose self-possessed "and at- tractive demeanor Impressed us all' most favorably, until we found that he was so- thoroughly a believer as to be the happy locking husband of four happy wives, when the ladies immediately denounced hint as an old heathen, and the gentlemen 'averred him deserving of much consideration as a long-suffering and much-to-be-pitied w. a 11 man.

nut, seriously, nis asstuuous efforts for our pleasure in Salt Lake placed us under many obligations to him. and his conversation, taken Lu connection with his long life of patient self-saerifice (having been with these people since he was a boy at Nauvoo)t could not fail to command our recog nition of his ability and of his belief in the conscientious sincerity in the (to us) strange, unnatural religion. "Accompanying Mr. C. was Hon.

W. H. Hooper, the Mormon delegate to Congress a smart-looking man and fluent talker, but as we listened tohim we could not help feeling that he was a Mormon from polio, and that he really did not believe, any more than we did, the doctrines he so volubly discussed and advocated. He was for merly a captain on our own Missis- Lai ppi, but wentk West, married a Mor mon lady and has since joined the church. He has but one wife, and has become immensely "One other gentleman from Salt Lake City our party met, to whom it was a real pleasure to listen, for we were getting at the truth of the mat ter Hon.

He finds them much as other erring mortals, aside from the peculiar doctrine of polygamy, which, ot course, is ab horrent to entirely disap proves of all violent measures and ad vises that charity which bearth and hopeth all things, believing that matters, are rapidly righting themselves and that It As only a question of time. "And now, leaving so many things I want to mention, but space forbids, I must tell yeu what I thought of that great mogul, Brigham Young. You have already been informed of our forma! reception at his 'lion As I paased through the great iron gate, with those thick high walU on either side, I could not resist a certain penitentiary sort of feeling. But thU was dispelled as we were ushered into a large, beautiful room, with great easy chairs, marble-topped tables, paint-legs, statuary etc.

I was wofully disappointed in the personal appearance ef Mr. You he. He is a fleshy, de crepit old gentleman, whose large neck was enveloped in a red silk handkerchief, and whose small gray eyes looked upon us indifferently and al most suspiciously. But the most sg eravatine of all was that we were not permitted to see even oneMrs. Young.

Only think how trying to a woman's curiosity, in a house where nineteen women lived together, and not get a glimpse of one! The ladies of our party will never forgive Brigham for that malicious twinkle of his eyes as be suavely bowed us out of the door and hoped we were enjoying ourselves and 'seeing all the "In the evening, at the opera house, through the kindness of Mr. Fuller, we had some promlnentMormon ladies pointed out to us, though not one of Brlgham's family was present. There is one face we can never forget that of the fourth wife of Joseph A. Young, formerly a Miss Stenhouse, daughter of the lady whose expose of Mormon- Ism is now creating so great a sensation. She sat in an elegant private box, with her little son, about three years her side.

She cannot be much over twenty, with slender form, delicate, spirituele face, and large brown eyes, with a wistful, half-sad expression, which seemed peculiar to the faces of all the better class of women whom I saw. they tell us, and I doubt not truthfully, that their women are i the strongest advocates of their peculiar faith. So our missionaries tell' us the heathen women are more tenacious of their Idolatrous rites' than their bus To those who understand the depths of a woman's heart this Is not strange, but, oh, for more light from above for all these sad, misguided sis ters, that their sacrifice of slf and zeal for their, religion may be directed aright, and not merely administered to tbe will and grosser appetites of man!"
